Your Image: Part 1
Posted on Nov 20, 2007 under Coaching Leadership |Coaches have many responsibilities: their families, community and church, the athletes on their teams, and the students they teach. That role model responsibility is also an opportunity.
SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE
It is important that you are aware of everything you say and do in front of your different publics. Your dress, conduct, language, personality, and your ability to work under pressure are observed by many different people. If you observe the rules you have set up for others, you will gain respect, and you can have a tremendous impact on everyone you encounter on professional and personal levels.
Be an example to your athletes; talk to them about values. There is nothing wrong with that. Not enough people take a stand today on behalf of strong family, community, and personal values. Those who do take a stand, and live according to the rules they expect others to live by, have bright futures as coaches and athletic administrators.
Young people are very observant. You can make or break your career as a coach by your attitude, leadership, honesty, integrity and by showing and telling people that there are right and wrong ways to do things. Young people are looking to you for more than how to run a play the correct way. You spend twenty or more hours each week with these people during the season. Take advantage of that opportunity by helping your student-athletes to prepare, not just for each game, but for their futures.
