Spring to Summer Transition
Posted on Nov 20, 2007 under Coaching Basics |Most teams take the summer off from regular practices and matches. To prevent burnout, this is a good idea. Yet to walk off the field after the last game of the Spring season and say “See you in September” to your players leaves too much space.
There are several ideas for wrapping up the season in a positive manner while building a bridge between the Spring and Fall seasons. Try to put some thought towards and hopefully communication with each player. Remember to keep an evident balance between observing and over-examining players. The coach and player need to evaluate in a constructive manner as an overly analytical investigation of the player will add tension, stress, and expectations.
Each player (and parent!) should be approached individually because we all take criticism in different ways. Always start and end with positives with the suggestions, weaknesses, and areas of improvement sprinkled within.
With each item, discuss in what ways and how the player can improve over the summer.
Player Evaluation
- Have players rate themselves according to the various components Technical, Tactical, Physical, Psychological
- The more you break down the elements of the evaluation into specifics, the more effective the evaluation.
Position
- Where did the player feel most comfortable?
- Where can the player contribute the most?
- Are there any new positions that the player wants to try?
Relationship with Teammates
- Are there certain players with whom the player does not get along or play well?
- (Always be aware of cliques)
Leadership
- In what ways can the player be a positive example for other players?
- Examples: composure at the end of the game, control of temper, work ethic, positive communication, etc.
Performance in Training Sessions
- Good attendance and punctuality
- Work ethic, mental concentration, attention span, learning curve
Injuries
- Preventive measures (e.g. more stretching)
