Pre-Game Preparation
Posted on Nov 20, 2007 under Team Coaching |As the season gets underway, think about the coach’s appearance and attitude during the pre-game period on the day of the match. Do you appear focused in a confident, organized, and positive manner or are you scrambling about, appearing stressed and out of control? The players on the team feed of the coach’s demeanor, especially on game day. The players have plenty of nervous and insecure emotions (many self-induced) already, so why further disrupt their equilibrium by your own complexion? Consider the following components as you present a positive, organized demeanor on game day.
1. Be Early
Get to the field first, especially on away games, to collect your thoughts and greet the players warmly and optimistically.
2. Look Sharp
Rolling out of the bed straight to the field is not a very impressive or serious appearance.
3. Mind Set
A Warm “Game Face” Carry a focused look in the eye, but don’t look too serious. You want the players to respect you, not fear you.
4. Equipment Check
Be sure to bring water, balls, uniforms, players ID’s and other game day supplies. Remember to set an responsible example so that you may expect the same from the players. It is especially important to have plenty of water, even during warm-ups.
5. Team Discussion
Don’t over-emphasize the strengths of the opposition just before the game. Hopefully you have reserved tactical preparations for the training sessions. Keep your instructions clear and very succinct.
6. Team Motivation
Even against the toughest opposition, try to include a “We can win this game” attitude. Let the group know you believe in them, and they will have a better chance of rising to their individual and team potential.
7. Individual Motivation
A handshake, “good luck,” or pat on the back will do wonders for each player.
Have fun! It’s the coach’s time to watch and smile once the game begins.
