Player Evaluations
Posted on Nov 02, 2007 under Coaching Preseason |Each player will have strengths and each player will have weaknesses. The coach and player need to build a supportive relationship so that the two can highlight what areas are sound and examine what areas are less developed. This acknowledgment should lead to plan of action, actual training to raise the level of the player.
Following is a rating chart (1 - 10 with 10 the best) attempting to encompass the major elements of being a player. Base the scores on the perfect player at the player’s age group, not necessarily the best player on the team. Provide a team average for each element if desired. Suggested wording on scores would be:
1 - Poor (major detriment)
3 - Weak (needs work)
5 - Fair (still needs work)
8 - Quite Good (polishing helps)
10 - Perfect!
You need to vary your level of scoring according to the age and level of the players. Don’t grill them too hard.
The player can also do a self-evaluation. Regardless this will probably be the first time many of them have honestly analyzed their abilities. The coach will should away from the process with more ideas to formulate more effective training sessions, better game plans, and more complimentary lineups.
