Organizing a Training Session

Posted on Nov 20, 2007 under Coaching Practice |

Writing a lesson plan for your practices can often result in a smoothly run training session. The aim is an effective plan that includes a theme, but still appears flexible for the coach and dynamic for the players.

A sample outline for a lesson plan:

Date:
Number of Players:
Number of Balls, other equipment, etc.

I. Objective

II. Warm-up:

Use exercises that will help prepare the group both physically and mentally for the objective of the session.

III. Demonstration of the concept

Discuss the objective by walking through some examples. Illustrate the team’s tendencies while revealing new options.

IV. Progression of match-related training exercises

Add pressure and limitations (space or time).

V. Match condition training exercise

VI. Discussion and/or summary demonstration - Positive Reinforcement

VII. Cool down / Stretch

When you are not getting the results from a training session you desire, try adding conditions to raise the level of play. Too often the coach backs up to a more fundamental level which easily insults the players.
